The idea of this festival is similar to that of the Tanglewood Music Center Fellowship Program or La Jolla music festival during summers where fellowships are offered to young music talents to provide them the opportunity of advanced study with contemporary peers and master teachers from around the world.  Cho-Liang has put in a lot of thoughts and efforts to pull together an incredible level of advisory committee and faculty as listed in the announcement behind this very first international music academy and festival in Taiwan.

In addition to concert next Sunday, the following are their appreciation gifts for donating more :
  1. Any one with a donation of $300 and up will be invited to an appreciation concert at a private residence in the Fall.  Date and location to be determined.
  2. In addition to the appreciation concert included in item 1 above, any couple with a donation of $1,500 and up will be invited to a private reception after the concert on May 19 at Rice.  Details will be communited to the donors upon receipt of the donation.
  3. In addition to the appreciation concert and private reception included in items 1 and 2 above, any one sponsoring a full scholarship of $3,500 will be recognized in the program and offered festival passes for priority admission to master classes, chamber concerts, special events and discount to festival orchestra touring concerts August 2-19, 2019 in Taiwan.

I will be there 2 pm.
Hope to see you there as well.

Documentary screening: “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” 5 pm Monday, September 17, 2018; BioScience Research Collaborative Auditorium 6500 South Main Street Room 103 Houston, TX 77030

Dear CADAH members,
Thank you to Dr. Helen Li and her friend Ms. Katherine Shen for sharing this invitation from the Chao Center for Asian Studies of Rice University regarding the screening of the Oscar nominated documentary “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” on Mon, 9/17.

This event is to be held as part of the Liu Distinguished Visitor Series where distinguished visitors are invited to campus to discuss a topic of broad humanistic interest.
Following the financial crisis of 2008, only a single bank in America was indicted for alleged wrongdoing: Abacus Federal Savings, a small community bank serving Manhattan’s Chinatown. The Academy Award-nominated documentary Abacus: Small Enough to Jail, directed by Steve James, chronicles Abacus’ prosecution—a conspicuous one, given the lack of indictments for much-larger banks who had admitted to worse crimes. The film examines the effect of the trial on founder Thomas Sung; his daughter, President and CEO Jill Sung; and the rest of their family, as well as on New York’s Chinese community as a whole.

Rice University’s Chao Center for Asian Studies presents a free screening of Abacus along with a reception and Q&A with the Sung family, on Monday, September 17, as part of the Frank and Cindy Liu Distinguished Visitor Series. Eddie Allen, CFA; Senior Partner of Eagle Global Advisors, LLC, and Chairman of the Board of Asia Society Texas Center; will moderate the Q&A. Join us at the BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC) Auditorium, conveniently located just outside of Rice campus, at 5 PM, for this very special event. Paid parking is available underneath the BRC, accessible from Dryden Road.
